Spotted: FriendFeed Beta — coming soon

A new version of FriendFeed, which may or may not be called “FriendFeed Beta” is in the works, FriendFeed co-founder Bret Taylor just confirmed to me.

Earlier tonight I was going through my Flickr traffic logs of all things when I noticed the mysterious beta.friendfeed.com domain. I attempted to go to it but after prompting me for my FriendFeed username and password, I was redirected to FriendFeed proper — a sign that the site is likely internal for the time being.

Taylor declined to give any more details other than they were “working on something new” and that it would be coming soon, first in a limited test.

FriendFeed, a social content conversation site, has been relatively quiet in terms of updates the past few weeks after a rush of new feature after new feature for a while.

So what could this version feature? Better filtration of feeds? A whole new look and feel? It’s probably pointless to speculate as many of FriendFeed’s updates seem to be things you didn’t even realize you wanted — but you did.

With Facebook encroaching on FriendFeed’s turf with feed importing and now comments, and with AOL buying FriendFeed competitor SocialThing, it seems to be the right time for FriendFeed to evolve.

And it will. Soon.
