For those of you who really want to buy an iPhone 3G but refuse to use AT&T’s service, the wait is over — almost. As the video below shows, a group known as Dev-Team has created a software unlock for the device that will allow it to run on other carrier’s networks. Now you just have to wait 10 more days to try it yourself — the team plans to release the code on New Year’s Eve.
The software, called “yellowsn0w,” only has to run for a few seconds before everything is working. As you can see below, the team was able to get T-Mobile service working on a previously locked AT&T iPhone 3G.
Of course, to take advantage of this, you’ll still have to figure out a way to buy an iPhone 3G without agreeing to the 2-year contact AT&T and Apple shove in your face before letting you walk out of the store with the iPhone. Or perhaps you don’t mind paying AT&T a monthly fee on top of whatever provider you wish to use, or maybe you’ll pay the termination fee, or maybe you’ll just buy an iPhone from another country.
Update: And here it is — but be warned, results vary.
