MobileBeat2009 Top Startup Competition: Deadline extended to July 1

MobileBeat competitionWe’ve extended the deadline for the MobileBeat2009 Top Startup Competition by one day, until July 1.

We’ve gotten scores of great submissions, but we’d like to make sure we shake out as many as possible because of all the exciting action going on in the mobile industry right now.

We’ll try to fast-track the notification process as quickly as possible, starting now for the best submissions we’ve already received, but we’ll be sure to notify everyone by July 6 at the latest. The conference is on July 14. More about the event here. You can buy tickets here. Move quickly, because our previous events have sold out, and we’re getting close.

We’re seeing new, dynamic forms of mobile advertising (tribe advertising, for example), a set of new platforms for mobile application developers to exploit, including everything from the incumbent Java-based industry to new ones such as the Palm Pre. We’re seeing a host of new startups emerge to take advantage of these platforms.

In our MobileBeat Top Startup competition, we’re looking to profile the best application and service companies — those that promise to change peoples’ lives while they’re on the go. We’re looking for submissions from start-ups younger than three years old, and in two categories.

1. Mobile application companies — Our board of advisors will select seven application companies to present for two minutes on stage to our full audience.

  • They should fill out this form. In the last box of that form, titled “Anything you’d like to add,” the applying company should address the following:
  • How does it change peoples’ lives?
  • How does is leverage a particular platform really well — whether that platform be Android, RIM, Windows Mobile, Symbian, Palm, or Apple’s iPhone (again, extra consideration will be given to such applications)?
  • Is it offering a truly mobile experience, as opposed to being yet another Web site merely transferred to a mobile format?

Tesla award2. Mobile services companies — Our board of advisors will also select seven mobile services companies to present for two minutes on stage to our full audience.

  • These companies aren’t offering applications, but they offer services to applications or other companies hoping to exploit the mobile platform (examples of such companies include serving ads, or providing payment technology)
  • The company should fill out this form. In the last box of that form, titled “Anything you’d like to add,” the applying company should address the following:
  • Explain how it benefits from the mobile application boom, and how they change peoples’ lives.
  • How does it leverage a particular platform really well — whether that platform be Android, Rim, Windows Mobile, Symbian, Palm, or Apple’s iPhone (again, extra consideration will also be given to such service companies).

After each two-minute presentation, a panel of judges will provide rapid-fire feedback.

After final deliberation in the afternoon, winners will be announced, and our Tesla award (pictured) will be bestowed.

Finally, while Apple iPhone applications and services are clearly hot right now, we’re seeking to avoid having this become an Apple-centric competition. At most, we’ll pick only three applications that support either the iPhone or Android platforms exclusively.
