Asus takes on Macbook Air with UX21 ultrathin laptop, new Eee PC

UX21, asusAsus debuted its new UX21 ultrathin laptop today at the Computex conference in Taipei. The device has an aluminum alloy body, weighs 2.4 lbs and is 17mm thick. It also boasts a SATA III SSD, USB 3.0 connectivity, the ability to hibernate for a week and a CPU that can be specced up to Core i7.

It’s clearly meant to be a competitor to Apple’s Macbook Air and has both the power and aesthetics to succeed.

It wasn’t the only super-thin laptop Asus offered up at the conference. The company also showed off its colorful Eee PC X101, running Intel’s MeeGo operating system. The company is also offering a  X101H model, which includes all the same features as well as a hybrid hard drive that lets users choose between Window 7 or MeeGo.

The Eee PC X101 starts at just $200, while the UX21 will likely have a price comparable to the Macbook Air.
