Tecmo Koei and Nintendo team up for Zelda: Hyrule Warriors combat game

Link is going all-combat, all the time, in his new game from Nintendo and Tecmo Koei.

During this morning’s Nintendo Direct livestreaming online presentation, Nintendo revealed Hyrule Warriors, which is an action-combat game based on Tecmo’s Dynasty Warriors series. It has the green-clad Hyrulian hero fighting off huge waves of enemies from The Legend of Zelda series.

Nintendo and Tecmo Koei are targeting a 2014 release for the Wii U.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata confirmed that the game isn’t the next part of the “core” Zelda franchise. The publisher is working on that separately.

Hyrule Warriors is also a temporary name that could change before it launches.

Tecmo Koei’s Dynasty Warrior franchise is best known for throwing hundreds of enemies on the screen at once. Players usually take control of a swordsman that must hack-n-slash their way through the wall of opponents. It looks like Hyrule Warriors is taking that basic concept and plugging in characters and locations from the Zelda franchise.
