Apple is exploring the possibility of producing its own stylus for use on the iPad, according to a recent patent application.
Previously, Apple cofounder Steve Jobs criticized touch screen devices that built the use of a stylus into the core experience. But in the current era, Apple is more open to the idea.
The patent application shows that Apple sees a stylus as an add-on rather than a necessary component for iPad users. Its own stylus would differ from others by featuring an extendable multi-touch “nib” and built-in motion and light sensors. I assume this would allow Apple to simulate the experience of using an actual ink pen. Also, the extendable nib could feature various lengths that allow you to draw thin lines or mimic paint brush strokes.
This kind of stylus would definitely be useful for people in creative or education-related fields, but probably not for the general consumer audience.
