“In five years,” every single one of Samsung’s products will be a connected “Internet of Things” device, Samsung chief executive Boo-Keun Yoon said today during the opening keynote at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
During the event, Yoon argued that the Internet of Things (IoT) trend — the concept of connecting traditionally non-connected devices to the Internet — “has the potential to transform the economy, our society, and how we live our lives.”
But, Yoon said, “the IoT experience has to be seamless, [and] that is why I am making a promise: Our IoT devices will be open. We will ensure that others can easily connect to our devices.” And by “others,” Yoon means “other companies.”
After Yoon made that promise, he brought SmartThings CEO Alex Hawkinson on stage. There, Hawkinson announced that the company’s new smart-home “Hub” will work even if your Internet or power goes down. Later, Yoon announced Samsung’s plans to invest $100 million in the developer community for “Internet of Things” apps.

Samsung’s keynote follows the company’s press conference earlier today, during which it announced a number of small product releases, including the launch of new 4K TVs with “SUHD” screen tech.
