WhatsApp, the mobile messaging app Facebook acquired last year, now has more than 700 million monthly active users, cofounder and chief executive Jan Koum said on Facebook today.
It’s up 16 percent since hitting 600 million monthly active users back in August, and it had only half a billion in April. He also said that WhatsApp users send over 30 billion messages every day.
In November, Facebook announced that its Messenger app had 500 million active monthly users, trailing behind WhatsApp. Facebook said in April that it would cut off chat from its flagship app, forcing users to download and use Messenger for that purpose.

Yesterday, news broke that WhatsApp will be adding voice calling in 2015 after its February announcement of that feature never materialized in 2014.
Facebook announced its acquisition of WhatsApp in February 2014 for $19 billion in stock and cash. WhatsApp was founded in 2009 by Jan Koum and Brian Acton, and raised $58.3 million in funding prior to its acquisition.
