Folks can’t get enough of that early Resident Evil survival-horror vibe.
Resident Evil HD Remastered released digitally on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in January of this year. It also had a physical release limited to Japan and Asia. The game set the record for day-one sales of a digital title on the PlayStation Network, and it’s gone on to sell over 1 million copies worldwide, Capcom announced today. It’s now Capcom’s fastest selling digital title of all time in Europe and North America.
These strong sales show that gamers have a lot of love for Capcom’s early Resident Evil titles, before the series deviated from its survival horror roots. They also demonstrate the increasing importance of digital content in the console industry, with digital sales in March running at $84 million — up 20 percent on the previous year.
“This [success] is in part because the dev team made a great product, but also because of the excellent word of mouth and general praise fans shared about the title,” reads a post on Capcom’s blog. “We want to thank everyone for rediscovering this modern classic, or thank you for trying it for the first time.”

GamesBeat’s Dale North was impressed by the care put into Resident Evil HD Remastered in his review, saying, “By keeping true to its roots, Resident Evil HD Remaster manages to strip away all of the superfluous additions we’ve seen piled on over the years, leaving only survival horror in its purest form.”
