Two weeks after opening registrations for the beta product, live video-streaming app Meerkat has finally arrived for Android. While the app is still technically classed as a beta product, it’s now available for anyone to download via Google Play.
Meerkat lets users live-stream from their phone to all their Twitter followers, and made a big impression after its debut at South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin earlier this year. However, the hitherto iOS-only app was one-upped by Twitter itself in late March when it launched its own similar product called Periscope, again an iOS-only affair.
Though Periscope has been growing in mindshare, and the Meerkat buzz has subsided somewhat, the fact that Meerkat is now available on Android could give it a big boost as it looks to make good on its $14 million funding.
That said, Twitter has an Android version of Periscope in the works too, so it’s only a matter of time before the two companies are at loggerheads on both platforms. It’s up to Meerkat now to see if it can gain enough traction on Android to give it a fighting chance.
