Bayonetta developer Platinum is bringing back Nier for Square Enix

LOS ANGELES — Nier lives.

The Square Enix action-adventure game Nier is back with the help of Platinum Games. The publisher announced the return during its Electronic Entertainment Expo event today. Production has only just started on the project, but the company wanted to show off what it has so far, which is just a pretty-looking trailer.

Platinum Games explained that Square Enix approached it to take on the sequel. While the developer is working on the title, the original game’s director — Taro Yoko (who wore a horrifying nightmare mask onstage) — will return to oversee the project.

It’s been a big show for Platinum. We also learned this morning that it’s working on the new Star Fox, and it’s also working on a cel-shaded, 1980s-inspired Transformers: Devastation for Activision.

Square Enix says it won’t have any more details on the game through this E3. This even includes the subtitle, which is also still secret. The publisher plans to start talking more about Nier in the fall, which is when the Tokyo Game Show happens.
