AppThwack, a startup that developed a web service for testing out mobile sites and mobile apps on real iOS and Android devices, today announced that it has been acquired by public cloud market leader Amazon Web Services. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.
The news comes a few days after Amazon showcased a new service, AWS Device Farm, that bears a strong resemblance to AppThwack — except it’s currently only supporting Android and Fire OS devices.
The AppThwack team “launched AWS Device Farm — a new service that will help you improve the quality of your apps by testing them against real phones and tablets in the AWS Cloud,” AppThwack wrote in a message that’s live on its homepage today.
AppThwack’s existing service will shut down on Sept. 1, according to the message. The team is encouraging people to sign up for Device Farm, which does not (yet) support iOS devices.

The team and technology should help Amazon maintain and improve a service that’s not quite yet a standard among cloud providers, where Amazon competes with Microsoft, Google, IBM, and others.
Portland, Oregon-based AppThwack started in 2012. Investors included In-Q-Tel, Rogue Venture Partners, TiE Angels Oregon, Portland Seed Fund, and Upstart Labs. Customers included Mozilla, New Relic, and Symantec.
Other recent Amazon Web Services acquisitions include ClusterK, 2lemetry, and Amiato.
