Messaging app Telegram today announced some nice improvements.

In version 3.1.0, you can now search for something in a chat with a specific person, and the app now supports playback of media from services like SoundCloud, YouTube, and Vimeo.

“Just tap on the preview of a link to an external media to view the video or listen to the audio file (speaking of audio files, they are now beautifully rendered and played in chats),” Telegram said today in a blog post on the news.

Telegram isn’t nearly as big as, say, Facebook-owned WhatsApp, which now boasts 800 million monthly active users, or Facebook’s Messenger, with 700 million. But for an app supported by brothers and VK founders Nikolai and Pavel Durov, Telegram’s user base of 50 million monthly active users is still nothing to laugh at.

Convenient tweaks like these should help the app become even more popular than it is now after being available for not even two years. With that sort of growth rate, it may well be a target for acquisition.
