Square Enix is holding an event for the next entry in the Final Fantasy series this evening, but we may already know one of the biggest announcements.
Update 8:13 p.m. Pacific: Square Enix has confirmed the release date during its Uncovered event.
Final Fantasy XV will hit PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on September 30, according to a video from GameSpot that the website has now made private. It’s likely that Square Enix will officially announce this date when its Final Fantasy event kicks off tonight at 7 p.m. Pacific (10 p.m. Eastern) on Twitch. Final Fantasy is a role-playing game where players typically go on epic adventures featuring fantasy and sci-fi themes. It is one of Square Enix’s most important franchises, and this latest entry in the series represents a chance for the publisher to reestablish itself as a dominant force in the console space. The worldwide gaming market generates $99.3 billion in spending, but many of Square Enix’s fellow Japanese game makers have shifted almost entirely to the mobile space. The success of Final Fantasy XV will likely determine a great deal about how the publisher approaches console gaming in the future.

Square Enix began development on Final Fantasy XV in 2006. Back then, it was a PlayStation 3 game called Final Fantasy Versus XIII. Now, an entire decade later, the company is finally doing the final preparation for release.
