Microsoft today revealed the specs for Project Scoprio to Digital Foundry and Eurogamer. Scorpio is the code name for the next version of Microsoft’s Xbox One console, which will come out late this year.
- CPU: Eight custom x86 cores clocked at 2.3GHz
- GPU: 40 customized compute units at 1172MHz
- Memory: 12GB GDDR5
- Memory bandwidth: 326GB/s
- Hard drive: 1TB 2.5-inch
- Optical drive: 4K UHD Blu-ray
Not only does the new hardware represent an upgrade from older Xbox One models, but Project Scoprio will put the brand ahead of the PlayStation 4, which launched its mid-cycle upgrade (the PlayStation 4 Pro) last year. Project Scorpio has more memory (12GB GDDR5 compared to PlayStation 4 Pro’s 8GB GDDR5, 8GB of which will be available for games as opposed to 5GB for PlayStation 4 Pro), memory bandwidth (326GB/s compared to PlayStation 4 Pro’s 218GB/s), and a better CPU (eight cores clocked at 2.3GHz compared to PlayStation 4 Pro’s 2.1GHz).
It will feature the same hard drive size as the PlayStation 4 Pro, but it will be able to play 4K Blu-rays (a feature even the Xbox One S can tout that the PlayStation 4 lacks).
The improved hardware will allow the system to run games at 4K resolutions while targeting better performance than was possible on older Xbox One models. Even if you’re not playing on a 4K TV, you should notice higher framerates and more detailed images.

These mid-cycle upgrades are something the industry is still wrapping its head around. It used to be that a console would launch and see support for about five years, with newer models making small adjustments (usually just making the actual system smaller). But Project Scorpio represents a major hardware improvement. While it will play the same games as older Xbox One models, those titles will look better on Scorpio.
