The retro point-and-click adventure game Thimbleweed Park is now out for the Nintendo Switch. It comes from Ron Gilbert, the man who created many classics while working at LucasArts in the late ’80s and early ’90s, including Maniac Mansion and The Secret of Monkey Island. It $20 for a digital copy.
Thimbleweed Park features controls and art similar to those pixelated classics. The game is even set in 1987, the same year that Maniac Mansion launched. Thimbleweed Park first released for Xbox One and PC in March, with PlayStation 4, iOS, and Android versions following. But the Switch release could be the most significant. Nintendo’s new home console/portably hybrid has been a big hit since it launched in March, and indie games like this are already finding success on the platform.
Point-and-click adventure games could have a natural home on the Switch. The console has a touchscreen as its main display when you’re using it in its portable mode, which works great for these kind of games.
Thimbleweed Park is a murder mystery that has you controlling multiple characters, but it still contains the humor that helped make Gilbert’s games famous.
