Publisher Stardock is preparing the return of its Star Control series. The studio acquired the license from the rubble of Atari’s 2013 collapse, and it will finally launch a reboot called Star Control: Origins next year. You can preorder the space adventure sim now on GOG or Steam, and you can also buy Star Control: The Ur-Quan Masters (the first and second game) and Kessari Quadrant (the third game) right now for the first time on Steam.
Star Control: Origins is separate from the Ghosts of the Precursors followup from the original developers of Star Control II: The Ur-Quan Masters, which is still coming at some point in the future.
Stardock also launched a bundle that includes the preorder for Star Control: Origins as well as The Ur-Quan Masters and Kessari Quadrant for $27. That’ll jump to $30 when the Origins goes live in 2018.
Star Control has players exploring a galaxy and interacting with a wide variety of alien species. Origins, which takes place in the year 2086, has you on a mission to intercept a hostile race determined to destroy Earth. To accomplish that goal, you have the “most advanced starship the human race has ever constructed,” according to the Stardock press release.

“Of course, ‘advanced’ is relative,” Stardock president and chief executive Brad Wardell, said in a statement. “What your ship looks like and what it can do by the end of Origins won’t resemble what you started with. Your ship is, in essence, your character.”
While Origins won’t launch until 2018, Stardock is planning a beta release of the game’s Super-Melee mode. This is a combat simulator that has players piecing together a fleet of ships each with their own strengths and weaknesses. You then take that fleet into battle against other Super-Melee players or an A.I. opponent.
“If you’ve ever wanted to design your own starship and see how it fares against other people’s ships, you’re going to love this,” said Wardell.
