Epic Games launched a Halloween event for its co-op survival game Fortnite. It’s also introducing new features to its standalone competitive mode, Battle Royale. Fortnite is available in Early Access on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
Fortnite: Battle Royale has been a big hit since it launched in September. The free-to-play game was able to tap into the popularity of the emerging genre, helped by the PC hit PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds — and has already reached more than 10 million players. New content and features can help keep both games healthy.
The original, cooperative Fortnite (which Epic Games calls Save the World) received new story missions and a new Halloween themed area, Hexsylvania, which includes new holiday-based creatures and weapons.
Battle Royale got a leaderboard, hero cosmetic items, and player progression. These features will help keep the community engaged. Progression and cosmetic systems can encourage extended play. The cosmetics, which don’t impact actual gameplay, can be bought with real money from an in-game shop.
