Sega announced Thrones of Britannia today, a new strategy game and the first in a new Total War series, A Total War Saga, that will focus on specific historical eras. It will come out for PC in 2018.

The franchise started in 2000 with Total War: Shogun. The strategy series now has 15 entries that have combined sold over 20 million units. Developer The Creative Assembly, the studio behind Total War, also made Halo Wars 2 for Microsoft.

The Total War games usually span generations and multiple epochs, but Thrones of Britannia centers on the European wars that took place around 878 AD. It will feature the same large-scale strategy gameplay as the main series.

“Our aim with Total War Sagas is to explore key flashpoints at distinct places and times in history”, said series director, Mike Simpson, in a press release sent to GamesBeat. “Unlike our era-spanning titles, we’re putting defined geographical areas under the microscope, building super-detailed campaign maps with a strong cultural focus and flavor that players can dive into. This will complement our broader-scope titles perfectly”.
