Here is Apple's first attempt at a smartwatch … back in the '80s

Concepts published in a new book by former Apple designer Hartmut Esslinger reveal Apple’s first attempt at a connected smartwatch back in the 1980s.

Esslinger’s design depicts a headset and a wristwatch dial pad — a far cry from the smartwatches of today.

The release of this design concept coincides with recent Apple rumors that suggest — with possibly zero validity — that Apple will soon debut an iWatch device at its World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC). After watching Samsung fumble with the Galaxy Gear for months, we’re itching to see if Apple can do better.
