Move over “Gangnam Style” and make room for “Hello.” YouTube announced that the popular song from Adele has become the fastest video to reach 1 billion views, toppling previous record holder PSY’s catchy dance number from several years ago. It only took Adele’s video 87 days to hit this milestone, compared to PSY’s 158 days.
Hitting the 1 billion views mark has become a milestone more videos are reaching these days. YouTube said that there are 17 videos with this achievement, with seven new ones added in the past three months: Maroon 5’s “Sugar,” Major Lazer’s “Lean On,” Eminem’s “Love The Way You Lie,” LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem,” OneRepublic’s “Counting Stars,” and Sia’s “Chandelier.”
“Since 2014, the number of days to reach 1 billion views has dropped dramatically,” the company wrote in a blog post. “In 2013, the fastest track to 1 billion was Katy Perry’s ‘Roar’ at 487 days. In 2014, it was Taylor Swift’s ‘Blank Space’ at 238 days. In 2015, Adele managed to set the bar at 87 days.”
A glance at “Hello” on YouTube shows that it is well over the 1 billion mark, hovering at over 1.016 billion views. It’s certainly been a popular tune, even getting parodied on “Saturday Night Live” a few weeks ago (and by dozens of people on the video social network).
