A big investment is helping a long-awaited sequel make it through development.

Starbreeze announced today that it has agreed to publish System Shock 3, the upcoming first-person, sci-fi role-playing game. The original System Shock, which came out for PC in 1994, was one of the first games to combine aspects of the first-person shooter with RPG elements. The producer of the first System Shock, Warren Spector, is working on the third installment with Otherside Entertainment. Starbreeze is investing $12 million in the project and planning to release it for PC and “other platforms.”

“System Shock is one of those iconic franchises in the history of games that still gets my blood going and Mr. Spector is one of the founding fathers of the modern action RPG” said Bo Andersson-Klint, Starbreeze chief executive officer in a press release sent to GamesBeat. “We’re greatly looking forward to bringing System Shock 3 to players world wide in our collaboration with Otherside Entertainment and Warren Spector’s team. I’ll be first in line to play”.

The press release notes that System Shock 3 is in the early stages of development. While Starbreeze is investing in System Shock 3, Otherside will retain 100 percent of the intellectual property relating to the game.

Otherside also has other team members that worked on System Shock, System Shock 2, and other PC hits like Thief: The Dark Project and Deus Ex.

The Stockholm-based Starbreeze is also helping to publish Psychonauts 2, another anticipated sequel to a cult classic game. That 3D platformer is coming out for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in 2018. Last year, Starbreeze published the survival horror game Dead by Daylight.

This is a different project from the System Shock remake from Nightdive Studios, which received $1.35 million in crowdfunding from Kickstarter.
