Google has announced plans to unveil new devices on October 4. The date was first revealed yesterday on a billboard in Boston, followed today by a YouTube video, a Google+ post, and a new landing page. The event comes exactly a year after the company’s first “Made by Google” hardware event.
We don’t yet know where and what time the keynote will be held, but if it’s like last year it will be scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. Pacific in San Francisco (Update: Time and city confirmed — the event will be held in the SFJAZZ Center). You can expect it will be streamed live on YouTube.
The promotional video is titled “Funny you should ask…” and shows users googling the following questions:
- What’s wrong with my phone’s battery?
- Why is my phone always out of storage?
- Why does my phone take so many blurry photos?
- Why doesn’t my phone understand me?
- Why can’t my phone update itself?
- Why is my smartphone so slow?
- Why is my smartphone so hot?
- Why is my smartphone so fragile?

Err yeah, we’re not so sure anyone asks those last few.

In terms of hardware, Google is widely expected to introduce the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, which we detailed in August (squeezable frame, stereo speakers, dual rear cameras, and no headphone jack). Also expected are a new Chromebook Pixel and mini Google Home.
Last year, Google detailed the Pixel, Pixel XL, Daydream VR headset, Google Wifi, Chromecast Ultra, and Google Home. Updates to the company’s Daydream, Wifi, and Chromecast products are therefore all possible.
In terms of software, Google will likely talk about Android customizations for its new Pixel devices. Although Android 8.0 Oreo was released last month, the company’s devices will likely ship with Android 8.1. New Google Assistant features on the Pixel, Home, and Android devices in general will likely also be announced.
