Twitter now has over 200 million monthly active users, the company announced today.
“You are the pulse of the planet. We’re grateful for your ongoing support,” Twitter said via Twitter.
Twitter’s expansion, however, hasn’t come without growing pains. The company has had its fair share of issues this year, including a recent high-profile spat with Instagram. In September, Twitter introduced its new, more restrictive API, which places some pretty severe limitations on third-party developers. The Twitter ecosystem, unsurprisingly, has not been enthused.
Twitter’s update comes nine months after it announced its then-record of 140 million. But while 200 million is a huge number, it’s nowhere near the over 1 billion users that populate Facebook.

Still, Twitter is still clearly growing, and while it may not ever get 1 billion users, the company has become a pivotal part of the way the world gets news, keeps in touch with celebrities, and even announces presidential election results. And that shows some real staying power.
