Google-owned Nest will be releasing a software update over the next two weeks that will help its smart thermostat better match the temperature you set for the home, along with improved management of heat pumps and improved algorithms that are more efficient in helping you cut down on energy costs.
A major selling point of the Nest Thermostat is that it’s a smart device, meaning that it’ll use machine learning and analytics to provide a comfortable home while minimizing the costs you pay a utility provider to heat the home. Whether you’re at home during the day or night, or if you’re away for work or travel, Nest’s device will adjust its behavior to suit your needs.
The first part of the latest software update is an improvement in how closely the Nest Thermostat will match the temperature in the home. Now it’ll be 20 percent closer, according to the company: “If you set the heat to 70 degrees [Fahrenheit], your Nest Thermostat will be a lot better at keeping it at exactly 70 degrees [Fahrenheit]. That’s a pretty big deal and actually really, really hard to do right.”
Nest will also be tweaking its heat pump management feature to further optimize how hard the system will have to work to keep your home at its preferred temperature, hopefully saving on energy. The company has claimed that multi-stage heating systems will now save 3.8 percent more energy, while homes with heat pumps will save 6.5 percent more. Multi-stage cooling systems will also benefit from this software update, saving up to 5.4 percent more than before.

Lastly, Nest is introducing updates relating to predicting change and need in the home, specifically as it pertains to time-to-temperature, early-on, and heat pump balance. To accomplish this, the company has developed and deployed better algorithms and machine learning to make the Nest Thermostat smarter.
