For people with a chronic health condition, managing medication is typically an ongoing challenge. Recent reports estimate that medical mistakes are the eighth most common cause of death in the United States.
A tiny startup called PillPack wants to solve this problem with its new online pharmacy. For $20 a month, PillPack makes it easier for patients to manage their meds so they won’t miss any of the crucial pills they need.
The company, founded by TJ Parker (who grew up in the pharmacy business and worked at Massive Health before it was acquired by Jawbone), disclosed today that it has raised $4 million in venture funding in July from Atlas Venture and Founder Collective. The Manchester, N.H.-based company opted to delay this announcement until its commercial launch in 31 states today.
Sign up online and you receive all your prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, and vitamins in a two-week roll of individual packs, which are organized by date and time. PillPack works with your doctor and insurance provider if a prescription requires a prior authorization, and it manages your refills. Customers are also billed every two weeks in one comprehensive charge. The company has hired pharmacists to answer questions 24 hours a day.

This isn’t the only startup helping patients take their medication on time. Medisafe Project makes a mobile app that reminds people to take their pills, and Mango Health has a gorgeous mobile app that offers a “fun new way” for patients to manage their medications and reach health goals.
“PillPack is a breath of fresh air for anyone who has spent endless hours counting pills, coordinating medications, and navigating a complex system that causes frequent and often serious errors,” said Fred Destin, a partner with Atlas Venture, in a statement to the press.
