I've interrupted my ongoing, four-day-long Dark Souls binge to bring you this edition of News Blips. You're welcome!

Robert Daly, Pipeworks Software studio manager, falsely claimed to be "a former member of the United States Special Forces." Daly's claimed military credentials lent credence to the developer's Deadliest Warrior games, a spin-off project of Spike T.V.'s Deadliest Warrior show. Jeff Hinton, an actual former Green Beret, sought Daly's military records through the Freedom of Information Act and discovered that the United States Army Special Operations Command "has absolutely no record of [Daly] in their system." ABC's new T.V. show sounds eerily familiar to strategy gamers. Titled Ex-Comm (for "Executive Committee"), its producers describe the program "as a present-day 'presidential procedural' and a cross between the paranormal suspense of The X-Files and the political intrigue of The West Wing." Ex-Comm is "the government's covert team of America's most elite minds who investigate and protect our nation from the strangest occurrences and 'conspiracy theory truths' out there." In Julian and Nick Gollops' X-Com games from the '90s, players command the Extraterrestrial Combat Unit (X-Com) and investigate UFO sightings to defend the planet from a silent invasion. PC players are exceptionally unhappy with id Software's newest release. And they've taken to Metacritic to vent their frustration. They've qualified an avalanche of zeros for Rage with accusations of the first-person shooter being "buggy," "boring," and a poorly executed PC port lacking the usual optimizations. As of this writing, the reviews-aggregate site holds 198 negative submissions for the PC version of Rage, which dwarfs the PlayStation 3's and Xbox 360's five and seven, respectively.

Dark Souls save data hacked on the Xbox 360. According to the official wiki forums, crafty Xbox owners have successfully modded the save files for From Software's newly released, action role-playing game. At least you won't have to worry about running into unfairly earned, overpowered characters online because the game will only let players of similar soul level meet one another in deadly combat. From previously fixed Demon's Souls' deleveling glitch, which players of the Asian version of the game used to get around that restriction, so we're probably safe to assume that Dark Souls is likewise protected.
