Electronic Arts and the Irish government have clinked their Guinness mugs and reached an agreement that will see the game publisher hiring 300 customer-service agents in Galway, Ireland.
Galaway was already home to about 100 of EA’s European “customer experience centre of excellence” employees. This latest growth spurt will bring multilingual support across a wide swath of EA releases.
“The EA European Customer Experience Centre is the focal point of our strategy to serve gamers on a global basis,” EA chief operating officer Peter Moore said in a statement. “In today’s fast-moving digital environment, we need to engage with our worldwide customer base on a 24/7 basis, across all of EA’s games and services and in multiple languages.”

According to the long-time publisher, that’s exactly what this round of hiring will produce. The plan is for the Galway outpost to provide help to EA customers in 16 different languages.
The Irish government’s involvement, via its Industrial Development Authority, is more evidence of the global economy’s shifting priorities. Many nations that once had strong manufacturing and labor sectors are now turning to technology and services to keep up with drastically fluctuating demands and market realities.
“Digital games form a key part of the government’s plan for jobs and growth, and recently I announced the establishment of a new industry-led group to drive the creation of 2,500 extra jobs in the sector by 2014,” Ireland Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton said. “Today’s announcement that EA is creating a further 300 jobs so soon after investing in Ireland for the first time is great news and shows very clearly the enormous potential of this high-growth industry.”
EA has been notorious for its questionable customer service in the last few years. More customer-care representatives could mollify some of those issues.
