Paradox Interactive announced a new expansion for its PC strategy game Europa Universalis IV. Cradle of Civilization will focus on Muslim powers from the game’s time setting (about 1444 to 1821 AD). It will be available in late 2017 for $20.
Europa Universalis IV came out in 2013. It has sold over 1 million copies. Paradox has supported the strategy game with a steady stream of expansions. This will be Europa Universalis’s fourth. It’s Steam’s No. 49 top game by total playtime, according to SteamSpy, despite being four years old.
Cradle of Civilization also introduces Army Professionalism. “The Age of Mercenaries slowly transitions to the Age of Standing Armies as you recruit new generals and drill your peacetime army,” a press release from Paradox explained.
While you have to pay for the expansion, a free update for Europa Universalis IV will also come out at the same time. It will add a new map with “many new nations.”

Paradox specializes in “grand strategy” games like Europa Universalis IV. Grand strategy games focus on large-scale competition and empire growth between many nations over long periods of time. Along with Europa Universalis, the studio also develops the Crusader Kings and Hearts of Iron series.
Strategy games have been enjoying a resurgence thanks to the efforts of developers like Paradox and Creative Assembly, which works on the Total Wars series. Relic Entertainment has also been contributing with its Company of Heroes and Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War. That studio is now working on Age of Empires IV for Microsoft.
