Family Guy is ready to give its spin on another mobile staple.
Developer Jam City announced today that it is making a new game based on the hit animated series on Fox. It’s a match-3 puzzle game called Family Guy: Another Freakin’ Mobile Game, and the free-to-play app will launch this summer.
Licensed games can help give developers an edge in the competitive mobile market. Last year, Jam City acquired TinyCo, which developed Family Guy: The Quest for Stuff, a town-building game inspired by the success of The Simpson’s Tapped Out.
Another Freakin’ Mobile Game is another derivative title, this time going after the popular and crowded match-3 puzzle game market popularized by hits like Candy Crush Saga. But Jam City is not above having some fun at its own expense.
“If we were unable or unwilling to take a step back and make fun of ourselves, the game would neither be funny, nor would it be true to the Family Guy brand,” Josh Yguado, the co-founder and president of Jam City, told GamesBeat.
“In this game, we had to be confident enough in ourselves to be willing to make fun of both the good and bad parts of some free-to-play games. So many games and entertainment properties take themselves too seriously — our goal with this game was to have fun and make a playful but challenging puzzle game that was true to what Family Guy represents.”
Family Guy’s executive producer had a bit more of a tongue-in-cheek response to why this match-3 game exists.
“My children tell me many young people own smartphones, so this seemed like a good idea,” Rich Appel said in a press release.
