Here’s how Zelda megadorks control their smart homes

Using your voice to lock your front door or change the temperature in your home is outdated. You need to get on the new ocarina-controlled smart home.

YouTube creator Allen Pan of the Sufficiently Advanced channel released a new video today showing off how he controls the tech in his internet-connected household by playing songs from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on his own ocarina. The clip shows him unlocking his front door by playing Zelda’s Lullaby, turning on the heat by playing Bolero of Fire, and activating his humidifier by playing Song of Storms. Pan set up an always-on microphone connected to his network that can hear the audio, and then he programmed his automation system to decipher the music as commands for the various smart home devices.

This is the coolest.

Now, if you’re thinking that it’s a lot more work to learn how to play an ocarina so that you can control your house, then you’re missing the point! This isn’t about convenience, and it’s probably not about impressing a Tinder date that agrees to come home with you (unless they’re the one), it’s about finally justifying the $150 you spent on the Ocarina of Time replica you bought from Etsy.
