Getting into PC gaming is often tough because whenever you ask for buying advice, everyone yells at you to build your own. Yes, you’ll save money by doing so, and it’s important to understand how to upgrade your rig later to get the most out of it, but hey — buy a PC if that’s what you want to do. But I don’t think you should buy it from QVC.
The television shopping channel has a new Dell Alienware Desktop up for sale on its website for $2,970. That’s down from the normal QVC price of $3,270. That’s a lot of money, so you can bet that the rig is one mean beast, right? No. You’d lose that bet.
For just under three grand, QVC will sell you a PC with a Broadwell i7-6800K CPU, 16GB of DDR4 2133MHz memory, and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 graphics card. You can get this exact same system from Best Buy for $2,288.

If you really want to spend $3,000 on a computer (and again, if you’re willing to build), you can do so much better than that QVC offering. Take a look at this build, which features the newer Intel Core i7-8700K 6-core CPU, faster memory, a GTX 1080 Ti, a 256 GB PCIe SSD, and a 6TB HDD. Oh, and unlike QVC’s Alienware, you can also add a $745 1440p 165Hz 27-inch Asus gaming monitor and still come in at only $2,923 total.
So you can get why so many people insist that you should build your own PC. The value is impossible to ignore. If you do want to get something made for you, then definitely shop around. I’d suggest something like Origin PC, which enables you to pick your components, and then it will do the build for you.
But yeah, maybe not QVC.
