Update at 3:05 p.m. Pacific time: It looks like PSN is back up and running for most people.
PlayStation Network is not working for a lot of people. PlayStation 4 owners are having trouble connecting to Sony Interactive Entertainment’s online PSN service. The company has now confirmed the problems on its status site, and a significant number of fans are complaining about the outage on social media.
“You may have some difficulty launching games, applications, or online features,” reads Sony’s status site. “Our engineers are working to resolve the issue as soon as possible, and we thank you for your patience.”
These connectivity errors are preventing players from logging in to PSN. They’re also keeping players from booting into online multiplayer sessions or single-player releases that rely on a connection to a third-party server. PSN is also a crucial link for video services on PS4 and other Sony consoles, so you may also encounter problems getting into Netflix, Amazon Video, or Hulu.
PlayStation Network is a relatively reliable service these days. PSN has had a lot of outages and other problems in the past, including a week-long period starting on Christmas day in 2014, when PSN went offline as the result of a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack. Sony’s online infrastructure would then go down for up to a day at a time through 2016.
But so far in 2017, Sony has seemingly done the work to ensure PSN is more stable. For now, however, it’s offline, and fans are just hoping this is a short outage.
