Rocket League is getting a major update this month that will introduce a number of changes to how arenas, customizations, and competitive seasons work. The Autumn Update, as developer Psyonix calls it, is rolling out to consoles and PC on September 28, but the studio is also sharing some info on some other features coming to Rocket League.
This update is part of Psyonix’s regular schedule of adding content and improving its vehicular-soccer simulation. The game is one of the best-selling indie hits from the last couple of years, and the developer has shifted to a live-services model where it aims to earn revenue from microtransactions. To maximize consumer spending, Psyonix needs to keep players engaged and excited, and the Autumn Update could help accomplish that.
Here’s what’s coming in the Autumn Update, according to Psyonix:
Farmstead, a new seasonal arena available in competitive, casual, and private matches for a limited time this fall
More than 90 free new customization Items available as Uncommon, Rare, and Very Rare drops after online matches or from trade-ins
The introduction of player banners, a new player customization feature
The end of competitive season 5 and the start of competitive season 6
Standardization of arenas for competitive and casual online play
LAN Support for PC players
- Event system that are limited-time live games that enable players to unlock chests without having to purchase keys
Player banners will give you another cosmetic item to collect. These digital flags change the way your nametag looks to other players. If you score a goal, for example, others will see your handle and whatever banner you choose. Other highlights include the transparent goalposts, which will make it easier to track the ball as it approaches your defensive end.

After the Autumn Update, Psyonix is jumping right into testing its next major additions. A beta version of a new Party system will launch on PC. The studio will also introduce Tournaments, which is an unfinished feature that will enable players to set up competitions inside of Rocket League without having to rely on third-party software.
The upgraded Party system and Tournaments will go live for everyone eventually, but they are not part of the Autumn Update.
