Rock Band creator Harmonix goes mobile with its new rhythm-based game, Record Run

Guitar Hero and Rock Band creator Harmonix is about to enter the mobile market, and it plans to stay there.

Today at Penny Arcade Expo East convention, Harmonix dished out details about Record Run, the first of its 14 potential mobile games. It’s free-to-play, like many of its top-grossing competitors in the crowded but flourishing market, and it should be out soon. Gameplay is a rhythm-based form of the popular endless runner, where you control a constantly moving character while dodging obstacles and collecting objects (vinyl records in this case).

Harmonix exec Alex Rigopulos, who broke the news, emphasized that Record Run is about your favorite music. It differentiates itself from games like Temple Run 2 or Subway Surfers by bringing in your own music from your device into the game. It then creates gameplay that parallels the rhythms of your songs.

Rigopulos also wants you to know that Harmonix is in the mobile market to stay. During the same keynote presentation where he announced Record Run, he also showed brief video clips of 13 other mobile game prototypes. He seemed excited about them, saying, “There’s some crazy shit in there.”

Record Run doesn’t have a release date yet, but Rigopulos said it will be coming soon.
