Rocket League is heading to platforms other than just PlayStation 4 and PC.
Developer Psyonix is bringing its hit driving-and-soccer hybrid to other “current-gen” platforms, meaning an Xbox One release looks likely. Psyonix only focused on two platforms initially due to its small team size, Jeremy Dunham, the company’s vice president of marketing and communications, told GameZone. Now that it’s added a couple of additional people to the original 12-strong Rocket League team, Psyonix is ready to broaden its reach.
“We’re now in a position that we can expand our team,” said Dunham. “We are absolutely, 100 percent going to other platforms. What those platforms are and when we’ll come to them, I don’t know yet.”
Rocket League is proving more popular than Psyonix ever imagined, and it’s now hit over 5 million downloads across the Steam and PlayStation digital stores. A lot of those downloads were free for PlayStation Plus subscribers on PS4, but Psyonix would still have received payment as part of that deal. And it’s looking to build on the strong Rocket League playing community going forward with a range of free and paid-for downloadable content — and by targeting other platforms.

Dunham explained that Psyonix focused on PlayStation 4 and PC initially to ensure it made the best possible game: “We wanted to make sure that it was very good, very polished, that everybody liked it, and the only way we could ensure that was to focus on two platforms.”
Looking forward, Durham said, “Nothing is off the table. If the game can work on the platform … we will never say never to any of the platforms that are current-gen. Anything is possible.”
