Sony closes its Paris Games Week event with The Last of Us Part II (updated)

Sony gave us our first look at The Last of Us Part II since it announced the blockbuster followup last December. This new footage of the anticipated PlayStation 4 exclusive closed Sony’s Paris Games Week event.

The Last of Us Part II is from Naughty Dog, the studio that’s also behind the hit Uncharted series. It’s Sony’s go-to exclusive developer for cinematic games. The first Last of Us came out for the PlayStation 3 in 2013, and a PlayStation 4 version followed in 2014. It has sold more than 8 million copies.

The trailer showed Ellie facing a hanging. It continued the dark tones from the first game, including a disturbing scene of a woman having her arm broken with a hammer. The video did not show Joel, the main character of the last game, at all. (Updated 12 p.m. Pacific: Sony has revealed that the character being hung is not Ellie, so neither of the main characters from the first game are in the trailer.)

As shown in the game’s first trailer, Ellie is older than her young teenage appearance from the first Last of Us. She also has some impressive muscle definition in the video, which shows her rescued from a hanging by a teenage boy with a bow and arrow. The video ended with a wave of Clickers, the zombie-like monsters from the first game, rushing the human characters.
