Production of the iPhone 5 is moving ahead at full steam, with manufacturer Foxconn producing 150,000 units a day, according to a report from Taiwanese news site Digitimes.
The news is a sign that Apple is stockpiling iPhone 5s in preparation for its release within the next few weeks. Apple is expected to announce the phone some time in late September and have it available for sale by mid-October.
Sources within the iPhone 5 supply chain, including the touchscreen panel maker TPK Holding, and battery vendors Simplo and Dynapack, tell the site that they’re operating “at full swing.” iPhone 5 shipments are expected to reach 5 to 6 million during September, possibly topping 22 million units in the fourth quarter.
Pegatron, a Foxconn competitor, has reportedly landed about 15 percent of Apple’s total iPhone 5 orders, but its stock may not start shipping until next year, the sources say. Previously, we reported that Pegatron was aiming to ship as many as 10 million iPhone 5s during September. Judging from today’s rumors, that no longer appears to be happening.
