VLC for Android hits version 2.0, gets network browsing, subtitle downloads, and more

VideoLAN today released VLC for Android 2.0, the first major upgrade to the popular video player in six months. The release brings a number of new features and enhancements, and is available to download immediately from the Play Store. Along with Android N-compliant permissions, this latest version brings the following additions:

  • Network browsing — the ability to play files stored locally on network servers, and supporting DLNA/UPnP, FTP, SFTP, NFS, and Windows Shares protocols

  • Direct subtitles download — lets you download subtitle files directly from the app, using OpenSubtitles.org
